Juhi Attar – The Enchanting Fragrance of Indian Jasmine

Juhi is a beautiful and highly fragrant flowering plant belonging to the jasmine family. Botanically known as Jasminum auriculatum, Juhi is a traditional Indian jasmine celebrated for its delicate white flowers and intensely sweet, floral aroma. The flowers are small, elegant and release their most captivating fragrance during the evening and night.

For centuries, Juhi flowers have held a special place in Indian culture and traditional perfumery. Their soft, sensual and naturally sweet aroma has made them a treasured ingredient in the creation of traditional Indian attars. The fragrance of Juhi is often associated with freshness, elegance, romance and the beauty of warm Indian evenings.

The Traditional Art of Making Juhi Attar

At Ali Brothers Perfumers, Juhi Attar is crafted using the traditional Deg-Bhapka hydro-distillation method, a centuries-old art of natural perfumery practiced in Kannauj, the renowned perfume capital of India.

Freshly collected Juhi flowers are carefully placed in water inside a traditional copper still known as the Deg. The lid, known as the Sarpos, is securely sealed with a clay-saturated cloth and traditionally fastened to prevent the aromatic steam from escaping.

Pure sandalwood oil is placed inside the copper receiver, known as the Bhapka. As the furnace is gently heated, the water and Juhi flowers begin to release their precious aromatic vapours. Guided by the experience of skilled traditional distillers, the fragrant steam travels from the Deg into the Bhapka, where the delicate aroma of Juhi is absorbed into the sandalwood oil.

The process is repeated through several rounds of distillation. Fresh Juhi flowers are added again and again, allowing the sandalwood oil to gradually become deeply infused with the characteristic fragrance of the flowers. This slow and patient process is what gives traditional Juhi Attar its distinctive depth, warmth and natural character.

The Bhapka is continuously cooled in a water-filled cooling tank to help condense the aromatic vapours. After each distillation, the Juhi-infused water is carefully separated from the sandalwood oil and returned to the Deg for another round with fresh flowers.

This process continues until the sandalwood oil has absorbed the desired richness and intensity of Juhi.

Once the desired quality is achieved, the finished attar is carefully transferred into traditional leather bottles and allowed to mature. With time, the fragrance develops greater smoothness, depth and harmony, creating a naturally luxurious attar with the warm, woody character of sandalwood beautifully intertwined with the sweet floral character of Juhi.

The Fragrance of Juhi Attar

Juhi Attar opens with a fresh, sweet and intensely floral aroma, gradually revealing a soft, creamy and slightly sensual floral heart. As it settles on the skin, the warm, smooth character of sandalwood becomes beautifully apparent, giving the fragrance longevity and depth.

Its character can be described as:

  • 🌼 Floral – delicate and naturally sweet

  • 🌿 Fresh – clean and uplifting

  • 🌙 Sensual – soft, warm and captivating

  • 🪵 Woody – supported by naturally rich sandalwood

  • 🌸 Traditional – a genuine expression of Indian floral perfumery

Juhi Attar is appreciated by natural perfumers, aromatherapists, fragrance enthusiasts and anyone who values the beauty of traditional botanical fragrances.
